Most countries where wine is made have some form of hot spiced wine. I acquired a taste for gluwein when skiing in Austria but found that versions made by other people at home were terrible. Most people put a bottle of red wine in a pan, throw in some spices and boil until it is dead (and totally alcohol free!). So, I began to experiment and this is the result. This method has the advantage that the wine is not boiled. The spices are extracted in water, which is then added to warm wine.
Instead of a saucepan, you can use a coffee maker. You can vary the constituents to taste. If you leave out the sugar, it will keep a long time in the fridge - you can add the sugar just before use.
Put the following in a saucepan:
Filter through a coffee filter.
Put a
Warm gently but do not boil.
Add the boiling extract (or mix 3 parts wine to 1 part extract)
The gluwein should be at drinkable temperature, if not heat a little more.
Serve in heat proof glasses.
Great after skiing, or any winter activity - even shovelling snow!
Bon appetit
